System Admin Policies
- System Admin Philosphy
- We maintain your linux server, so you can concentrate ony our business
- We provide remote system administration of your servers from our offices
- We can visit your facility for additional onsite fee
- We fix the problem ourself with your permission - easier/faster than to explain
- We retain the root passwd to maximize performance and minimize down time and accidents
- We provide 24 hour per day coverage, 7 days a week, 365 days per year for any server anywhere in the world...
- Most problems would be encountered by others and previously solved by others that encounted that problem before
- Most problems have already been solved by the time you report it to us
- System Admin Response Period
- 1 Hour Turn Around - We already have encountered that problem before and have the solution in our database
- 2 Hour Turn Around - We already have encountered that problem before
- 4 Hour Turn Around - We need to research the problem
- 8 Hour Turn Around - We know of no known solutions at this time - must come up with other work around..
- Custom features and additional support requests are negotiable
- System Admin Preparation
- Please check which linux distribution you are running
- Please check which linux kernel you are running
- Be prepared to tell us what you changed if anything
- Please send the name of the program and version
- Please send copies of the error messages
- Please know the root passwd
- Please be prepared to run some experiments and make changes to your system
- System Admin General Terms
- Additional hardware is needed for *fault tolerant* systems
- Hardware replacment costs are extra
- We reserve the right to cancel the contract if we repeatatively spend excess time/energy to support *requests*
- All disputes to be resolved in Santa Clara County, per the laws of the city and State of California
- All legal fee and penalties to be collected in addition to the original amount
Minimum Linux Tech Support
- The following minimum Linux Support is included with your order
- Your linux choice of which linux distribution
- Includes Linux, cdroms, books, etc that comes with the linux distribution
- Your linux machine will boot linux
- Your linux machine will boot from floppy ( rescue disk )
- Your linux machine will be partitioned according to what you are going to be using it for
- Your linux machine will send/receive emails when connected to your ISP
- Your linux machine will be able to browse the internet when connected to your ISP
- X11 will be running
- Quality of Linux servers and workstation would vary depending on the user
- Anybody can install linux in 5 minutes ( assuming all the hardware is supported )

Harden your Server
- Apply all the known patches to the cdrom install
- Diable all the unused services and update/upgrade the required services
- Apply the Security patches and implement Security Policies
- Properly Backup your Server BEFORE going online
- Install the new server into your LAN

- Project-based System Admin
- We will provide a preliminary proposal for the project
- Proposals are billed at $200 per hour to prepare
- We encourage competative bidding with other equivalent system administration firms
- Onsite System Admin
- Onsite visits are billed hourly, starting from a minimum of $200/hr
- Travel time + travel expenses are additional charges
- 4 Hours maximum to attempt to fix the problem
- We will fix the fixable problems before we go home if we are able to stay
- We will bring "spare parts" for any servers we sold to you
- You should have data "backed up up on another server"
- OnSite Rate Schedule and Response time - "modeled after time-tested field service support rates"
- $200.oo per hour we arrive within 4 hours
- $400.oo per hour we arrive within 2 hours
- $600.oo per hour we arrive within 1 hour
General Linux Consulting and Support Rate Schedule
- Sources of FREE Linux System Admin
- Rate Schedule assumes that all Security and Admin Policy Items are strictly observed
- $50 per incoming emails and each additional email
- $150 per incoming phone call - 30 minutes
- $ 150/hr .... Typical server monitoring/admin ... ( reading of automated monitoring emails )
- $ 200/hr .... Typical software development ... ( CGI-programming, application development, sw reviews )
- $ 250/hr .... Typical security review/consulting
- $300 per hour for Security Related support and consulation
- Required Response Time
- 4hr - 8hr response time - normal rates
- 2hr - 4hr response time - 1.5x hourly rates
- 0hr - 2hr response time - 2.0x hourly rates
- Hourly fees are prepaid 1 hr minimum
- Hourly fees are doubled "after hours"
- Disounts on Consulting Fees
- Everything is negotiable depending on terms and conditions/restrictions
- We can match competitive bids for your project from similarly qualified corporations ( same terms/conditions )
System Admin Initiation and Compatibility/Reliability/Performance Review
- We do REQUIRE an initial setup and review fee ( $1,000.oo ) of your server before we support it
- this "system review" fee is waived if we built your server and never left our facility
- We do REQUIRE an initial setup and security audit fee ( $2,500.oo ) of your server before we support it
- applies when we are to be held "typically" accountable for "loss of data" due to breakin
Monthly Remote System Administration Contracts
- Rates based on the assumption that NO one else has the root passwd - minimize our support time required
- Does NOT include onsite calls
- $ 500 for up to 5 hours of general tech support - non-profit servers
- $ 1,000 for 7-10 hours per month - automated monitoring of your servers
- $ 2,000 for 15-20 hours per month - for marketing folks w/ extra web statistics
- $ 3,000 for 25-30 hours per month - typical costs of maintaining a server
- $ 4,000 for 35-40 hours per month - apply patches and upgrades as needed
- $ 8,000 for 75-80 hours per month - for security concious monitoring
- $10,000 for 90-100 hours per month - Full time junior system admin ( 2-5 yrs experience )
- $20,000 for 190-200 hours per month - Full time senior system admin ( 10+ yrs experience )
Hourly System Administration
- All non-contract based support will be billed for 1 hr minimum
- $ 200 per solution - Search our database for a solution and send solution via email
- $ 300/hr - Provide solution via telephone - not responsible if solution is not understood
- $ 400/hr - Provide solution that involves fixing other additional problems - ( ie misconfigured machine )

Allow users to login into our working Linux system
- Check things out on a working linux box at the time you're having a problem
- Check permissions, check directories, check libraries, check files, etc
- Copy executable binaries and sources trees
- Test your internet connectivity ( a second account )
- Check your results on your machine vs ours
- Off-site disk backup of your critical files
- $ 40/mon per 100 Mbyte Temporary backup, it will be erased/overwritten after 1 mont
- $ 60/mon per 100 Mbyte Permanent backup to our monthly tape
